The cannabis plant consists of hundreds of unique phytocannabinoids. The most known and studied of these being THC and CBD.
These two compounds, although very similar in structure have very different effects, the THC compound is accredited for giving the intoxicating psychoactive effects of being “high” or “stoned” whilst CBD remains safe, non-addictive and nonintoxicating.
These compounds amongst the hundreds of others found in cannabis have amazing healing properties and researchers are unlocking more information on the intricacies of these compounds every day.
How these compounds interact with the body is where it gets really exciting!
THC and CBD engage with the body by copying and improving a natural compound produced by our bodies called “Endogenous Cannabinoids” or “Endocannabinoids” aptly named for their similarity to the compounds found in the cannabis plant.
These compounds form part of a regulatory system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The endocannabinoid system is involved in managing physiological & cognitive functions including but not limited to, fertility, pregnancy, appetite, pain-sensation, mood & memory.
